Perla Faye Humphrey
Director

Perla Faye Humphrey is a native of Flint, Michigan and currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia. Perla’s educational background is not filmmaking, but many aspects of Information Technology and Computer Science, earning a Bachelor of Science from Michigan State University and a Masters from Atlanta University.

As an independent filmmaker, Perla believes that her technical background has served her well in the business as it has provided her with the skills and discipline needed to plan such a huge undertaking, while keeping production costs within budget, a challenge that she accepts with ease.

Perla is truly a rare gem who has strong characteristics in both her creative talents as well as her technical skills. She has demonstrated her creative talent with the production of Unforgiven Sins, a suspense thriller that has audiences literally glued to their seats and guessing the plot for 108 minutes. A true test of an audience’s emotional and psychological attachment to a film is the number of viewers that remain in their seats, afraid that they will miss something if they leave for popcorn or a quick run to the restroom. And, after two premiers and over 350 viewers, not one viewer left their seat while the movie was in play. That says a lot!

Perla has been fascinated with movie watching since she was a child. As a young girl, she recalls going to the theatre with her siblings to watch films of all genre, including some memorable films such as The Sound of Music, Blackcula, and The Blob, to name a few.

In 1992, Perla’s sister, Vanessa Humphrey-Ghazi, who is also an aspiring independent filmmaker, founded Ebony Egg Productions, LLC in Houston, Texas. The vision of Ebony Egg Productions is to produce entertaining, yet thought-provoking works to its community. As a result of this venture, Perla wrote a feature length script, Shanghaied, and submitted it to the Houston International Film Festival for competition. The script made it to the final round of competition and although it did not win the competition, it was a ‘shot in the arm’ for Perla and helped to further fuel her passion for independent filmmaking.

In 2005, Perla took a leap of faith and decided to produce Unforgiven Sins (formerly Sanghaied) as an independent filmmaker and the rest is history in the making. Perla wrote, produced, directed and edited Unforgiven Sins. A first cut of the film was screened at the 2006 Urban Media Makers Film Festival in Atlanta and won the 2006 Audience Choice Award (http://www.umff.com/mainpages/winners.htm).

The film is currently being showcased via the film festival circuit and Perla is hopeful that the film will intrigue its audiences around the globe.

“For us, it’s not just about entertaining the audience. We believe it’s equally important to provoke our audience into thoughtful discussions about difficult topics. We are in this game not just to play it and play it well, but to make a difference in the lives of others.”
